"The coal company came with the world's largest shovel."

For four years running, we have partnered with great Southern artists — Original Bitter Southerners all — to raise funds for their favorite cause. We were pleased beyond measure when one of the greatest, John Prine, asked us to do the same to benefit the Appalachian Citizens' Law Center.

Ten dollars from every shirt sold will benefit the ACLC, which fights for justice in the coalfields of Appalachia. In the center's words, "The Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center is a nonprofit law firm that fights for justice in the coalfields by representing coal miners and their families on issues of black lung and mine safety and by working with grassroots groups and individuals to protect the land and people from misuse and degradation caused by extractive industries."

The design for the John Prine: Original Bitter Southerner T-shirt comes from Brian Steely, who has designed tour merch for the likes of Widespread Panic, Mumford & Sons, and Phish. After he went to work on this design, Brian told us, he was haunted by a line from Prine's immortal song "Angel From Montgomery." The line? "Make me a poster from an old rodeo."
