The air is rich with the smell of carne asada packed into tacos, gorditas, and tortas. Families bring coolers, folding chairs, noisemakers, and Mexican flags. Live mariachi and banda music accompany the events. Perhaps most impressively, the competitors’ attire — trajes de charro for men and vestidos de escaramuza for women — dazzle with embroidery, color, and metallic thread. The designs reflect a proud lineage of resistance against Spanish landowners who once forbade Mexican ranch workers from dressing like them.
